| PROGRAM The SUMMIT
program has been developed in response to a nation-wide survey of the
Business Leadership Network. In addition to the specific issues/topics that
were suggested, two general were two general themes that were recommended:
more content for employers and more opportunities for networking. We have
done our best to incorporate both of these.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
The Summit will feature several nationally-recognized
Keynote speakers who will inspire and enlighten
attendees in our Plenary Sessions.
NETWORKING CIRCLES
In addition to the scheduled Workshops we will have a room
set aside for Networking Circles. Knowing that our Workshops can't address
every possible topic of interest to all attendees, we will have a room set
up with discussion tables. On a first-come first-serve basis, attendees will
be able to schedule these tables for discussions on topics of their own
choosing. A large visual chart will be posted with these Topics and their
scheduled times.

Disability
Awareness: Disability Jeopardy
Whatever their job responsibilities, all staff should be
knowledgeable about and comfortable with interacting with people who have
disabilities. Whether the interaction is with job applicants, employees,
co-workers, or customers, this information will not only keep your organization
out of court, it will enhance your image and profitability. Achieving a comfort
level with individuals with disabilities will eliminate needless anxieties about
making mistakes and allow everyone involved to focus on the transaction or job
at hand.
Based on the television game show “Jeopardy”, teams of
participants will select questions of increasing difficulty (and point values)
from among several categories including (a) Disability Etiquette; (b) ADA
Basics; and (c) Numbers, Please (statistics about disability and employment).
As with the television game show, there will be a and “final jeopardy”
question. The facilitator will strike a balance between moving the game along
at a quick, yet relaxed pace, while taking the time necessary to clarify answers
or respond to questions.
Research: The Facts About Employment and Disability
This session will provide an overview of recent
employment and disability research that can inform effective employment
practices for persons with disabilities. Some of the areas to be covered
include: trends in relative employment and household income rates for people
with disabilities, research to date on selected employment and
disability-related legislative initiatives (the Ticket-to-Work and Work
Incentives Improvement Act, the Workforce Investment Act, and others), and
emerging disability nondiscrimination workplace research (such as a recent
Cornell University study on information technology applications in e-recruiting
and other human resource processes and its implications for applicants and
employees with disabilities).
