International Day of Disabled Persons
3 December
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed, in resolution 47/3 of
14 October 1992, that 3 December be observed every year as the
International Day of Disabled Persons. The Day was initially proclaimed to
commemorate the anniversary of the General Assembly's adoption of the
World Programme of Action concerning Persons with Disabilities to promote
understanding about disability issues and to increase awareness of gains
to be derived from the integration of disabled persons in every aspect of
political, social economic and cultural life.
The International Day of Disabled Persons provides an opportunity for
governments, organizations of persons with disabilities and all in society
to focus on the freedoms and potentials of persons with disabilities.
There are many examples of initiatives undertaken by governments and
organizations for persons with disabilities in observance of previous
International Days of Disabled Persons. Some of these
examples, as well as other information, can be found at:

Policy and Development Mission: To assist in the
promotion of effective measures for prevention of disability,
rehabilitation, and the realization of the goals of full participation of
disabled persons in social life and development, and of equality.
